Madinah (also spelt Medina and Medinah) is located 440 km north of Makkah and has a population of 1,000,000. It is the second holiest city in the Islamic world (the first being Makkah).
Madinah is the city of the Prophet Muhammed and the place where the Holy Qur'an (Koran) was originally published and its armies spread the word to Persia, Syria and Egypt. It was in Madinah that the Prophet Muhammad faced by the persecution from the local Makkhan merchants, departed in 622 AD to Makkah (Mecca). When the citizens of Madinah asked the Prophet to live amongst them, arbitrate in their affairs and submission to the will of the one God, Allah, that the Islamic era began. The Prophet Muhammad was buried in Madinah.
Its importance as a religious site for Islam derives from the shrine of Muhammad, Qubbat al-Nabi (Mosque of the Prophet) The Prophet's Dome was built on a site next to the Prophet Muhammad's home. The first Islamic Mosque, Masjid Quba, (Quba Mosque is also located in Madinah.
Like Makkah (Mecca), the holy city of Madina only allows Muslims to enter. | |
