Located by the Red Sea, in the Western province, with a population approaching 3,500,000, Jeddah is the second largest city in Saudi Arabia, after the capital, Riyadh.
Jeddah has developed from humble originals as a fishing port, over 2,500 years ago into the largest commercial port in Saudi Arabia. From 647 AD it was used Muslim Pilgrims traveling to Mecca for hajj, this was a significant event in Jeddah’s development and history.
There are several different spellings for Jeddah, which include Juddah, Jidda, Jiddah and Jedda. There are 2 theories as to the origins of the name. The more popular theory is that the name is derived from “jaddah” the Arabic word for grandmother. According to folklore, the tomb of Eve is located in Jeddah and Eve is considered the grandmother of humanity. The second theory is that its name means "seashore", with obvious reference to its position by the Red Sea.
