The municipality of Al Khobar was founded in 1942, prompted by the discovery of oil and the ensuing development of commercial activity.
Many of Khobar's residents work for Saudi Armco, the world's largest oil company, in nearby Dhahran. Other residents work in support roles. Traditionally, Khobar has also been a city of shopkeepers and merchants, and the city today boasts numerous modern malls and boulevards with internationally recognized franchise shops and eating places.
Al Khobar was a small fishing village inhabited predominately by the Al Dawasir tribe. After the discovery of oil in the 1930s, it was rapidly developed into a major commercial and shopping center and to a lesser extent, industrial port.
In recent years Al Khobar has extended and developed its waterfront into a scenic Beirut style corniche with parks, eateries, and family beaches.
